Kumana is the east coast's premier bird sanctuary and Sri Lanka's quiet wildlife secret — an easy morning's drive from Arugam Bay.
About 35 km south of Arugam Bay (a 45- to 75-minute drive through Pottuvil and Panama), Kumana National Park — once known as Yala East — wraps around the Kumana Villu, a 200-hectare freshwater wetland that draws tens of thousands of nesting and migrating birds.
You'll ride in an open 4x4 with a local guide who knows where the animals move. Kumana has quietly become one of Sri Lanka's better places to spot a leopard, precisely because so few vehicles come here — but we'll always be honest about what you're likely to see on the day.
What you'll see
- 255+ bird species, including pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, and the rare black-necked stork
- Elephants, water buffalo, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles, and peacocks
- Leopards — present and increasingly seen, but never guaranteed (this is the wild, not a zoo)
- The Kumana Villu wetland — busiest with nesting birds from April to July
Best wildlife: the dry season, roughly May to September. Best birding: April to July. Mornings are cooler and best for birds; late afternoons are good for elephants.
Kumana or Yala?
Both are wonderful parks. Here's the honest difference.
Far fewer jeeps
In peak season, Yala can feel like a traffic jam around a single leopard. Kumana often has just 10–20 vehicles in the whole park — sometimes you'll have a sighting all to yourself.
The birding capital
The Kumana Villu wetland is one of Asia's great nesting sites. If you care about birds, Kumana is the better park, full stop.
Easy from Arugam Bay
Kumana is your local park — under an hour away. Yala is a 2.5- to 3-hour trip each way from here.
Honest about leopards
Yala still has the higher leopard-sighting rate. Kumana's odds are rising and the experience is wilder and quieter — but we'll never promise a leopard.

We booked a safari to Kumana National Park with Sanka Safari and had a fantastic experience from start to finish. Our guide picked us up promptly at 5am and looked after us brilliantly throughout the trip. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and had extraordinary eyesight, spotting birds and animals we would never have noticed ourselves. It was also clear that he knew the roads and the park extremely well. Unfortunately, we were just unlucky with the headline wildlife. The elephants and leopards were keeping a low profile that day, and every other jeep we passed seemed to be having exactly the same experience. That's safari—nothing is guaranteed, and we'd much rather see animals behaving naturally than being crowded by vehicles. That certainly didn't make the trip a disappointment. Kumana National Park is beautiful, with winding tracks through forest, wetlands full of birdlife, herds of deer, water buffalo, peacocks seemingly everywhere, and even a mongoose that ran alongside our jeep for a while. We also stopped for a refreshing king coconut, which was a lovely touch and much appreciated after the early start. If you're looking for a professional, friendly safari company that provides an excellent experience regardless of what the wildlife decides to do on the day, I'd happily recommend Sanka Safari.

Did a full-day safari to Kumana National Park with Sanka Safari and it was honestly one of the highlights of my trip to Sri Lanka! The wildlife did not disappoint - we saw so many animals throughout the day, and a big part of that was down to our guide's incredible eye. He'd spot things long before any of us would have noticed, and clearly knew the park inside and out. On top of being knowledgeable, he was genuinely friendly and easy to spend the day with. A really nice touch: we were treated to fresh fruit and coconut water along the way, which was perfect in the heat. Can't recommend Sanka Safari enough. If you're heading to Kumana, book with them - you won't regret it. A great day from start to finish!

What to bring
Neutral-coloured clothes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and binoculars if you have them. We bring coconut water and bottled water; pack any snacks or a lunch you'd like (or ask us to arrange one). A telephoto lens is a joy here.

Where is Kumana National Park, and how far is it from Arugam Bay?
Kumana sits on Sri Lanka's east coast, about 35 km south of Arugam Bay — a 45- to 75-minute drive through Pottuvil and Panama. The last stretch to the gate is a bumpy track, which is why drive times vary.
When is the best time to go on a Kumana safari?
For general wildlife, the dry season from roughly May to September is best. For birds, April to July is peak nesting and migration at the Kumana Villu. Early mornings are cooler and best for birds; late afternoons are good for elephants.
Will I see a leopard?
Maybe. Leopards are present in Kumana and sightings are becoming more common, but they are never guaranteed on any single drive. Because so few jeeps come here, when a leopard is found you often have it to yourself.
What animals will I actually see?
You can reliably expect water buffalo, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles, and peacocks. Elephants are seen on most drives. There are 255+ bird species. Leopards and sloth bears are the lucky sightings.
Kumana or Yala — which should I choose?
Choose Kumana for quiet, world-class birdwatching and an easy trip from Arugam Bay. Choose Yala if your top priority is the highest possible chance of a leopard, and you don't mind crowds and a long drive.
What's the difference between a half-day and a full-day safari?
A half-day safari starts around 5:30 a.m. and runs to about 11:30 a.m.–noon — roughly six hours, and plenty for most visitors. A full-day safari also starts at 5:30 a.m. but goes until around 6 p.m. and deeper into the park, for the best odds at leopards. Lunch isn't included on either — bring your own, or ask us to arrange it.
How much does it cost, and what's included?
A typical tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Arugam Bay, an open 4x4 jeep with a local guide, the park admission ticket (already included — nothing extra to pay at the gate), and coconut water and bottled water. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll confirm the current price for your group and dates.
Is food included, and what about lunch?
We bring coconut water and bottled water for everyone. Food itself isn't included — you're welcome to bring your own snacks or a packed lunch. Prefer not to? Just ask: we can set up lunch inside the park or at a local restaurant. Arranging it is free; you only pay for the food.
Do you pick up from my hotel?
Yes — we pick you up from your hotel in Arugam Bay. Pickup from Pottuvil or Panama is usually fine too; just ask when you book.
What should I bring and wear?
Neutral-coloured clothes, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. We bring the water (coconut and bottled); pack any snacks or a lunch you'd like. Bring binoculars if you have them, and a telephoto lens for photos. Closed shoes are better than sandals on the rough tracks.
Is it suitable for kids, families, and older travellers?
Yes — children love the open jeep. Keep in mind the tracks inside the park are rough and bumpy, which can be tiring for very young children or anyone with back trouble. Tell us your group and we'll advise.
Do I need malaria tablets?
No. Sri Lanka eliminated locally transmitted malaria in 2016. Bring insect repellent anyway for mosquitoes, especially around the wetland at dawn and dusk.
